Oslo, August 31st (2011) - Dir. Joachim Trier

Oslo, August 31st, is a film that details the existential plight of a recovering drug addict who once had everything he had dreamed of. Like his film "Reprise '', Joachim Trier once again employs the admirable efforts of Anders Danielsen Lie to play the protagonist. Loosely based on the classic novel and film of "Le Feu Follet", (Written by Pierre Drieu La Rochelle and later directed by Louis Malle) Trier does a remarkable job of translating elements from both works to fit the context and story of Anders, who battles through similar concepts in modern day Norway.

Anders, before his addiction, was once a promising writer/author. He had a love he admired, a great social life, and worthwhile pursuits. After rehab, he now attempts to fix what is broken as he battles with the idea of life and its pursuits. Oslo August 31st, essentially depicts an internal and external argument about life and the many aspects that go into our will to keep going. Make no mistake, this film is incredibly serious in terms of its subject matter. Although its backdrop is dark, there are shining reiterations throughout the film that aid in presenting a worthwhile reflection for any viewer.
